Hue Bridge Issues with Orbi RBR20-100NAS and RBS20 Satellite
People tend to employ as many smart devices in their houses for a convenient lifestyle. One such gadget is Hue Bridge which allows an individual to control LED lights with the help of their iPhone or iPods. However, Hue Bridge needs an internet connection to be operated. For this, people generally hardwire their Hue Bridges to WiFi routers or available gateway. But, recently, a user reported facing a peculiar problem with Hue Bridge. He has connected the Hue Bridge to the Netgear Orbi RBR20-100NAS router and wanted to manage a few lights present outside his house.
But, thinking that the lights were at a little distance from the Hue Bridge and hence the Orbi router, he hardwired the Hue Bridge to one of his RBS20 satellites. For this, he also moved the satellite closer to the router. But, things become awry. When the lights were in the ON position, Hue Bridge HomeKit indicated them OFF and vice-versa. Then, he made the connections as they were before i.e. connected the Hue Bridge to the router directly. Things became normal again. His major concern was why the Hue Bridge behaved weirdly when connected to the Netgear Orbi satellite.
Well, the problem is quite clear and it is likely to show up with any smart device present in the house. With that being said, we have penned down this post where we will discuss some key points that can help you address such kind of connectivity issues easily.
What Might Have Happened with Hue Bridge and RBS20?
If we consider the case in the discussion, then it can be assumed that the user might have decimated the distance between the Netgear Orbi RBR20-100NAS router and the satellite. If you are not familiar with the working principle of the Orbi mesh system then you must know that ORBI ROUTER and SATELLITES DON’T NECESSARILY NEED TO SEE EACH OTHER FOR OPTIMAL COMMUNICATION. PLACING THEM IN EACH OTHER’S RANGE WILL SUFFICE.
Since the user had placed the router and satellite very close, this might have caused a clash of their WiFi signals and the Hue Bridge hardwired to the Orbi RBS20 satellite started behaving oddly.
Insight Gained from the Situation: You should never place your Orbi WiFi router and satellite too close. However, placing them out of each other’s range is also not recommended. In addition, they must be in sync if you want the connected devices to behave properly.
Fix: Connectivity Issues with Orbi RBR20-100NAS and RBS20
A clear-cut explanation of the problem that the user faced with his/her Orbi RBR20 and Hue Bridge has been already given above. But, there are chances that some other reasons might have caused the connectivity problem. What are they? Let’s find out.
Reason 1: Satellite’s Outdated Firmware
There are chances that your SATELLITE IS FLAUNTING THE OUTDATED VERSION OF FIRMWARE due to which the hardwired device (Hue Bridge in the case we discussed) acted out.
Solution 1: Update the Firmware
Do you use the Orbi app to manage your mesh network? If yes, then it is time to make the perfect use of the application. Just log in to the app using valid details and check if the Orbi RBS20 satellite’s firmware needs to be updated. If yes, then INSTALL THE LATEST FIRMWARE VERSION.
Note: You are also suggested to upgrade the firmware of your Netgear Orbi RBR20-100NAS router in case a new version of firmware is available.
Reason 2: Change of IP Address
Whenever a device connects to the Netgear Orbi router or satellite, it gets an IP address. There are chances that your Hue Bridge was assigned an IP address by the satellite which was previously assigned by the router. DUE TO THIS CHANGE OF IP ADDRESS, THE CONNECTED DEVICE BEHAVED ODD.
Solution 2: Assign a Static IP Address
ASSIGNING A STATIC IP ADDRESS TO THE HUE BRIDGE CAN ALSO WORK IN YOUR FAVOR. However, you have to go with this approach outside of the DHCP Pool within the same subnet. You can do this by accessing orbilogin.net on a device connected to the router’s network and tweaking some settings.
As said earlier, connectivity issues can arise with any device connected to the Netgear Orbi RBR20-100NAS router and RBS20 satellite. We have tried to address the issue with a Hue Bridge. You can use these tips to fix issues related to the device you own. We are now wrapping up the post with the hope that you will not face such kinds of problems in the future.
